Curriculum Core Rules & Strategy

EXAM CHECKLIST
01 // METHODICAL WORKING

Always write out given values and the relevant formula before substituting numbers.

02 // VERIFICATION RULE

Substitute your final answer back into the original problem to verify correctness.

03 // COMMON TRAP

Double-check negative signs, common denominators, and arithmetic order of operations.

Mastering Fractions as Percentages with SolveCalc

A percentage is simply a fraction with denominator 100. To convert any fraction to a percentage, either find an equivalent fraction over 100, or divide the numerator by the denominator and multiply by 100.

§ 01 CORE CONCEPTS

The Fraction–Decimal–Percent Triangle

Fractions, decimals, and percentages are three different representations of the same quantity. Fluent conversion between them is a fundamental mathematical skill.

  • Fraction → Decimal: Divide numerator by denominator. 3/4 = 0.75
  • Decimal → Percent: Multiply by 100. 0.75 × 100 = 75%
  • Fraction → Percent: (Numerator ÷ Denominator) × 100. 3/4 → (3÷4)×100 = 75%
  • Percent → Fraction: Write over 100, simplify. 75% = 75/100 = 3/4
§ 02 CONVERSION METHODS

Two Methods for Fraction to Percent

Method 1 — Equivalent fraction over 100: If the denominator divides 100 evenly, scale up.

3/4: 4×25=100. So multiply by 25/25: 3×25=75. Answer: 75%

Method 2 — Division then multiply: Works for ANY denominator, even ones that don't divide 100.

5/7: 5÷7 = 0.71428... × 100 = 71.43% (to 2 d.p.)

Method 1 is exact; Method 2 may require rounding for non-terminating decimals.

§ 03 BENCHMARK CONVERSIONS

Essential Fraction–Percent Benchmarks to Memorise

These conversions appear so frequently that memorising them saves significant exam time:

  • 1/2 = 50%  |  1/4 = 25%  |  3/4 = 75%
  • 1/5 = 20%  |  2/5 = 40%  |  3/5 = 60%  |  4/5 = 80%
  • 1/3 ≈ 33.33%  |  2/3 ≈ 66.67%
  • 1/8 = 12.5%  |  3/8 = 37.5%  |  5/8 = 62.5%  |  7/8 = 87.5%
  • 1/10 = 10%  |  1/100 = 1%
§ 04 WORKED EXAMPLES

Fraction–Percent Conversion Problems

Example 1: Convert 7/20 to a percentage.
20×5=100. 7×5=35. Answer: 35%
Example 2: Convert 13/6 to a percentage (improper fraction).
13÷6 = 2.1667 × 100 = 216.67% (over 100% since it's greater than 1)
Example 3 (Real World): A student got 43/50 on an exam. What percentage is this?
50×2=100. 43×2=86. Score: 86%
§ 05 COMMON MISTAKES

Fraction–Percent Conversion Errors

  • Dividing denominator by numerator instead of numerator by denominator: 3/4 → 3÷4 = 0.75 (correct). 4÷3 = 1.33... (wrong fraction-to-decimal direction).
  • Forgetting to multiply by 100 after dividing: 3/4 = 0.75, not 0.75%. You must multiply by 100 to get 75%.
  • Assuming percentages can't exceed 100%: Improper fractions (greater than 1) convert to percentages over 100%. This is common in growth rate contexts.
§ 06 MEMORY TIPS

The Percent Conversion Shortcut

  • "Percent = per hundred" — "per cent" is Latin for "out of 100." Any fraction over 100 is already a percentage.
  • The "× 100" rule: Fraction → Decimal → Percent always follows the same path. Divide numerator by denominator, then move the decimal point 2 places right.
  • Build your benchmark table: Write the conversion chart for 1/2, 1/3, 1/4, 1/5, 1/6, 1/8, 1/10 on a flashcard and drill it until automatic.

Common Student Pitfalls & Exam Traps

  • Skipping steps: Even experienced mathematicians write every step. Skipping creates opportunities for errors.
  • Not checking answers: Always substitute your answer back to verify correctness.
  • Confusing similar concepts: Small differences in definitions can require completely different approaches.
  • Unit errors: Always keep track of units and convert consistently when working with real-world problems.
