Curriculum Core Rules & Strategy

EXAM CHECKLIST
01 // METHODICAL WORKING

Always write out given values and the relevant formula before substituting numbers.

02 // VERIFICATION RULE

Substitute your final answer back into the original problem to verify correctness.

03 // COMMON TRAP

Double-check negative signs, common denominators, and arithmetic order of operations.

Mastering Place Value with SolveCalc

Place value is the foundation of our entire number system. The value of a digit depends not just on what it is, but WHERE it sits in the number. The digit 5 in 500 is worth 100 times the digit 5 in 5.

ยง 01 CORE CONCEPTS

How Positional Notation Works

The decimal system is a positional notation system: the value of each digit depends on its position. Each position is a power of 10:

The number 47,382:
4 โ†’ Ten-thousands (4 ร— 10,000 = 40,000)
7 โ†’ Thousands (7 ร— 1,000 = 7,000)
3 โ†’ Hundreds (3 ร— 100 = 300)
8 โ†’ Tens (8 ร— 10 = 80)
2 โ†’ Units/Ones (2 ร— 1 = 2)
Total: 40,000 + 7,000 + 300 + 80 + 2 = 47,382
ยง 02 DECIMAL PLACES

Place Value Extended to Decimals

Place value extends to the right of the decimal point using negative powers of 10:

  • Tenths = 10โปยน = 0.1 (one digit after decimal)
  • Hundredths = 10โปยฒ = 0.01 (two digits after decimal)
  • Thousandths = 10โปยณ = 0.001
3.147:
3 = ones, 1 = tenths (0.1), 4 = hundredths (0.04), 7 = thousandths (0.007)
= 3 + 0.1 + 0.04 + 0.007 = 3.147 โœ“
ยง 03 ROUNDING

Rounding Using Place Value

Rounding means replacing a number with a nearby, simpler value. The place value system defines the precision of rounding:

  1. Identify the digit in the target place (e.g., tens digit)
  2. Look at the digit immediately to the RIGHT
  3. If that digit is 0โ€“4: round down (keep the target digit)
  4. If that digit is 5โ€“9: round up (increase target digit by 1)
Round 6,847 to the nearest hundred:
Hundreds digit = 8. Next digit = 4 (less than 5) โ†’ round down. 6,800
ยง 04 WORKED EXAMPLES

Place Value โ€” Three Practical Problems

Example 1: What is the value of the digit 6 in 364,821?
6 is in the ten-thousands column. Value = 60,000
Example 2: Round 0.04863 to 3 significant figures.
First 3 sig figs: 0, 4, 8. Next digit: 6 (โ‰ฅ5) โ†’ round up. 0.0486
Example 3 (Real World): A cheque for "three hundred and forty-seven pounds and fifty pence" โ€” write in digits.
Hundreds=3, Tens=4, Units=7. Tenths=5, Hundredths=0. โ†’ ยฃ347.50
ยง 05 COMMON MISTAKES

Place Value Errors

  • Confusing digit value with face value: The digit "3" in 30,000 has face value 3, but place value 30,000. The question specifies which is wanted.
  • Rounding in the wrong direction: If the deciding digit is exactly 5, round up (the standard convention). "Round half up" is the most common rule.
  • Significant figure vs decimal place: 3 decimal places means 3 digits after the point. 3 significant figures starts counting from the first non-zero digit.
ยง 06 MEMORY TIPS

Place Value โ€” Never Lose Track

  • Name each column: Write the column names above each digit. This eliminates positional errors entirely.
  • "Decimal point = anchor": The decimal point is fixed. Everything to the left is whole numbers (ones, tens, hundreds...); everything to the right is fractions (tenths, hundredths, thousandths...).
  • Thousands separator: Use commas every 3 digits from the right โ€” 1,000,000 โ€” to avoid miscounting columns in large numbers.

Common Student Pitfalls & Exam Traps

  • Skipping steps: Even experienced mathematicians write every step. Skipping creates opportunities for errors.
  • Not checking answers: Always substitute your answer back to verify correctness.
  • Confusing similar concepts: Small differences in definitions can require completely different approaches.
  • Unit errors: Always keep track of units and convert consistently when working with real-world problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the place value of 7 in 4,732? +

The 7 is in the hundreds place, so its value is 700.

What is expanded form? +

Expanded form breaks a number into the sum of each digit's place value: 4,732 = 4,000 + 700 + 30 + 2.
