Curriculum Core Rules & Strategy

EXAM CHECKLIST
01 // METHODICAL WORKING

Always write out given values and the relevant formula before substituting numbers.

02 // VERIFICATION RULE

Substitute your final answer back into the original problem to verify correctness.

03 // COMMON TRAP

Double-check negative signs, common denominators, and arithmetic order of operations.

Mastering Roman Numerals with SolveCalc

Roman numerals use 7 symbols (I, V, X, L, C, D, M) representing 1, 5, 10, 50, 100, 500, 1000. The subtraction rule applies when a smaller symbol precedes a larger one โ€” IV = 4, IX = 9, XL = 40, XC = 90, CD = 400, CM = 900.

ยง 01 CORE CONCEPTS

The 7 Roman Numeral Symbols

The Roman numeral system uses seven letters from the Latin alphabet, each with a fixed value:

  • I = 1  |  V = 5  |  X = 10
  • L = 50  |  C = 100  |  D = 500  |  M = 1,000

Additive rule: When symbols are arranged from largest to smallest (left to right), add their values. MCXIII = 1000+100+10+1+1+1 = 1113.

Subtractive rule: A smaller symbol before a larger one means subtract. Only 6 valid subtractive pairs: IV=4, IX=9, XL=40, XC=90, CD=400, CM=900.

ยง 02 READING ROMAN NUMERALS

Converting Roman to Decimal Systematically

  1. Scan left to right, comparing each symbol to the next one
  2. If a symbol is โ‰ฅ the next symbol, add its value
  3. If a symbol is < the next symbol, subtract its value
  4. Sum all results
MCMXCIX:
M=1000 (add), C= 1000โˆ’100+1000โˆ’10+100โˆ’1+10 = 1999
ยง 03 WRITING ROMAN NUMERALS

Converting Decimal to Roman Numeral

Work from largest to smallest symbol value. At each step, use the largest symbol that fits, subtracting it from the number:

Convert 2024:
2024 โˆ’ 1000 = 1024 โ†’ M
1024 โˆ’ 1000 = 24 โ†’ MM
24 โˆ’ 10 = 14 โ†’ MMX
14 โˆ’ 10 = 4 โ†’ MMXX
4 = IV โ†’ MMXXIV

Extended symbol table for conversion: M(1000), CM(900), D(500), CD(400), C(100), XC(90), L(50), XL(40), X(10), IX(9), V(5), IV(4), I(1).

ยง 04 WORKED EXAMPLES

Roman Numeral Conversions โ€” Solved

Example 1: Read XLVIII.
XL=40, V=5, III=3. 48
Example 2: Write 1776 (US Declaration of Independence year).
1000+700+76: M+DCC+LXXVI = MDCCLXXVI
Example 3 (Real World): Super Bowl LVII โ€” what year's game?
LVII = 50+5+1+1 = 57. Super Bowl 57 was played in February 2023. The 57th Super Bowl.
ยง 05 COMMON MISTAKES

Roman Numeral Errors

  • Illegal subtractions: IC โ‰  99 (I can only precede V or X). VL โ‰  45 (V cannot precede larger values). Use only the 6 valid pairs.
  • Over-repeating symbols: A symbol can be repeated at most 3 times consecutively. IIII = invalid; use IV. XXXX = invalid; use XL.
  • V, L, D never repeat: These symbols appear at most once. VV = X, LL = C, DD = M.
ยง 06 MEMORY TIPS

Roman Numerals โ€” Memorisation Strategies

  • Mnemonic for symbol order: "I Value Xylophones Like Cows Do Milk" โ†’ I(1), V(5), X(10), L(50), C(100), D(500), M(1000).
  • Memorise the 6 subtraction pairs: IV, IX, XL, XC, CD, CM. Write them on a card: 4, 9, 40, 90, 400, 900.
  • Look for them in real life: Super Bowl numbers, movie copyright dates, clock faces, chapter headings โ€” you'll see Roman numerals constantly once you look.

Common Student Pitfalls & Exam Traps

  • Skipping steps: Even experienced mathematicians write every step. Skipping creates opportunities for errors.
  • Not checking answers: Always substitute your answer back to verify correctness.
  • Confusing similar concepts: Small differences in definitions can require completely different approaches.
  • Unit errors: Always keep track of units and convert consistently when working with real-world problems.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is XLII in numbers? +

XLII = 40 + 2 = 42. XL = 40 (50 minus 10), II = 2.

How do you write 2026 in Roman numerals? +
